So first up, an idea from my one true love… He’s a finish carpenter. Anyway, my real point is that he is a tool connoisseur. If there’s a tool out there, he’s probably used it and has 10 of them. Ha! But, seriously. He’s offered suggestions in previous gift posts, but this year his new favorite tool is the Dewalt Oscillating Multi-Tool. Reviewers call it one of their most used tools and the best tool they’ve ever owned! ~ She Picks! 2014 – Or so she says…

Googles Cloud Platform gets new a cold storage service At an event in Londontoda…

Googles Cloud Platform gets new a cold storage service At an event in Londontoday Google announced a couple of updates to its cloud storage services. The most important of these isthe launch of Coldline a new cold storage service for archival data but the company also announced its newRegional storage service and the rebranding of its Standard storage under the Multi-Region moniker. If you know your Google Cloud Storage the launch of a new cold storage service may surprise you. With Nearline Google already offers a very affordable service for data archiving and disaster recovery after all. When Nearline first launched it was very similar to Amazon Glacier in that you would get a very cheap storage service but you had to pay for that with increased latency. When Nearline came out of beta earlier this year though it also became much faster. Instead of three to five seconds of latency access to data was nowreal-time. Coldline basically fills the gap that the improved Nearline service left after it came out of beta. Coldline storage will only cost $0.007 per gigabyte per month (and $0.05 per gigabyte retrieved). Nearline costs $0.01 per month. That may not look like a huge difference butthose numbers quickly add up if you are storing massive amounts of data. As a Google spokesperson told me Coldline latency will be as low as access to the companys other storage classes. Building off the positive response from Nearlines low-latency this was an important design aspect for Coldline the spokesperson told me. Coldline is now also included in Googles Switch and Save program which offers enterprises that move their data to the Google Cloud up to 100 petabyte of free storage for a couple of months. With this update Google is also nowre-branding its current standard storage service for fast highly available data access as multi-regional and adding a lower-pricedregional tier to this as well. As the name implies the multi-regionalservice is a highly available geo-redundant class of storage that ensures that if one region goes downrequests for your data can simply be routed to a different region. In that respect its not that different from using the old Standard storage service in one of Googles three multi-region locations (U.S. Asia and Europe). Image credit: Google All existing Standard storage buckets in one of these multi-region locations have been converted to this new Multi-Regional storage class. Googles SLA promises 99.95 percent availability for data stored in this service. To complement this multi-region storage service Google is also now launching its Regional storage service. Data in this class is only stored in a single region so it may not be quite as available as data stored in themulti-regional service (Googles SLA promises a 99.9 percent uptime) but for many workloads where the data only needs to be close to where the compute happens using this cheaper storage service should be just fine. To complicate matters a bit more Google is also shelving its existing Durable Reduced Availability (DRA) storage class. Its replacement is the Regional storage service but the company will continue to support the DRA class for existing customers. The company expects most users will move over to the Regional storage class though. And thats Googles new cloud storage lineup. Some of it is only a rebranding of existing services but even that helps to better define which service developers should use for different use cases. The only really new service here is Coldline which now gives developers a real cold storage service on the Google Cloud Platform and clearly positions Nearline as the service for backups and long-tail content. CoWatch is like a mini Amazon Echo on your wrist Read more Technology News Here –> digitaltechnology… Passed on Android Wear? Not into the Apple Watch? Maybe an Amazon Alexa powered smartwatch is more your style? If so check out the CoWatch which has now gone on sale after being revealed earlier this year. It essentially puts many of the functions of an Amazon Echo into a wristwatch. Made by startup company iMCO you can use the wearable to ask Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant for information including local weather traffic news and sports scores. Alexa even has functionality beyond those standard smartwatch features such as the ability to fill your Amazon basket via voice commands control home automation products and even summon Uber rides. As the first Alexa-powered watch on the market it’s certainly a unique selling point against its Android and Apple rivals. Rock around the Alexa clock The watch itself looks pretty swish too. Made with combinations of stainless steel and Zirconia Ceramics it features a 400x 400 Super AMOLED display powered by a 1.2GHz dual core processor. 1GB of RAM is also squeezed in with 8GB of internal storage. Water resistant with an accelerometer and heart rate sensor for fitness fanatics iMCO is actually running the Alexa software on its own fork of Android Lollipop rather than Google’s Android Wear OS. Called the Cronologics OS it’s been specifically designed to handle Alexa-heavy interactions – but don’t expect to have access to all the Android or Android Wear apps you’d expect with Google’s operating systems. It’ll be interesting to see how much long term support iMCO offer the OS. The success of the watch will probably determine that last point. Remember this device is also coming from an unproven startup as well so we’ll have to get one on our wrists to know how good it really is. But if you fancy taking a punt on an intriguing new wristable it’s on sale over at Amazon US right now in silver for $279 (about 210 or AU$365 if directly converted) and black for $299 (230/AU$390). It’ll pair up with any Android phone running version 5.0 and above or Apple devices on iOS 9 and up. Smiletime launches as yet another live-streaming service to connect creators and…

Smiletime launches as yet another live-streaming service to connect creators and fansSmiletime launched publicly Wednesday is the new live-streaming service for creators to interact live with viewers. Image: smiletime By Kerry Flynn2016-08-24 16:46:25 UTC For the last four years Danika Lee Massey has been talking about X-Men other superheroes and Game of Thrones with thousands of fans. More commonly known as Comic Book Girl 19 she spends hours each week producing YouTube videos about her theories and reviews. But earlier this year after signing with crowdfunding site Patreon she embraced the idea that not every video she makes has to be so finely edited and scripted. We recently launched on Patreon and one of the things they suggested to us was live shows talking to an audience live. I reached out to a friend of mine. Im not a tech person but I was talking to friends of mine about live-streaming Massey told Mashable while driving to the Smiletime studio in Santa Monica. Smiletime launched out of beta Wednesday is the latest service betting that livestreaming is the future of video consumption and mobile. It joins an increasingly crowded market with Facebook Live Twitters Periscope Amazons Twitch YouNow and a flood of startups. The majority of the apps offer what YouTube and TV traditionally lack live commentary and other interactive experiences for viewers. Creators like Massey can answer fans questions and the viewers can talk amongst themselves in the chat box alongside the broadcast. Being able to interact with fans that are really awesome and really excited about the show and have real questions thats something you dont get unless you go to conventions Massey said. On Smiletime viewers can up-vote each others posts in the hopes of catching the broadcasters attention. Broadcasters can show comments on the screen along with other images through a simple drag-and-drop system. They can also request for a viewer to appear in a video chat alongside them and run live polls. Creators like Comic Book Girl 19 (pictured here) can run live polls for viewers. Image: smiletime Those features on Smiletime are not unlike those on other services. YouNow previously allowed up-voting but now relies on a virtual currency model which Smiletime plans to incorporate in the future. Facebook is rolling out the option to invite viewers into the broadcast which has already been a part of YouNow. Smiletime is similar to other offerings that weve seen said Chris Knowlton vice president and streaming industry evangelist at Wowza a media streaming software company. I looked at the app looked at the Twitter feed. They said there were going to be different experiences. The service got noticed back in December 2014 shortly after it closed a seed round of $1.5 million according to Crunchbase. Were really thinking of Smilecasts as a place for broadcasters to innovate and for viewers to connect CEO and founder Alex Kruglov told Recode at the time. The future of is to create audience engagement with each other to create that electric feel. That mission has not changed. The future of is to create audience engagement with each other to create that electric feel that you experience at a concert or a panel discussion or a classroom forum whether its politics or comedy or music. You get that feeling from not just seeing a great performance but also bonding with the fellow crowd members Kruglov told Mashable. Over the last two years Kruglov has overseen improving the product and attracting talent. Kruglov hails from Hulu where he was the head of content acquisition from 2008 to 2014. His founding team at Smiletime includes Sharon Chang who works in multimedia and brand strategy and Jace Hall who works in video games and eSports. The first stage of the business focused on attracting significantly-sized networks to stream on Smiletime. For instance The CW hosts FanTalk where actors and fans talk about The Flash Arrow and other shows. TMZ has been using Smiletime five days a week since July 2015. Smiletime has been a tremendous partner. Theres just no other platform out there allowing this type of direct engagement. Smiletime offers the technology to make the audience just as much a participant as they are a viewer Jim Crosby executive director of digital for TMZ wrote in an email. A broadcaster or a producer can drag comments onto the main screen to show to all viewers. Image: smiletime The engagement is impressive for a service that has not been publicly touted and remains unrecognized among many people in the live-streaming industry. On Smiletime nearly 50 percent of viewers comment. The average viewing time for a video lasting at least an hour is 44 minutes. Smiletime declined to share active user numbers or other audience metrics. The next phase Kruglov says is allowing anyone to broadcast and releasing more options for creators to be paid. Smiletime allows broadcasters to have sponsorships and will soon offer a virtual tipping system. Unlike Facebook Smiletime is not paying celebrities athletes and media companies to create live videos (Mashable is a Facebook Live partner). We dont do that. Were in the technology business. Were in the platform business Kruglov said. I believe strongly that creators need to be paid and they need to get compensated. If not theyll go somewhere else. “I believe strongly that creators need to be paid Smiletime relies on Facebook for distribution and sign-ups. Broadcasters can simulcast their videos on Smiletime and Facebook. The comments do not sync and viewers on Facebook will not be able to participate in Smiletimes interactive features. Additionally watching on Smiletime requires a Facebook account for now. Kruglov does not fear Facebook eating away at his business. Facebook absolutely has the ability to do whatever they want he said. I would say having a video pop up in your News Feed is really distinct from having a full immersive environment where all youre doing is taking in a video experience. Additionally Kruglov envisions a perception in the marketplace where Smiletime stands for high-quality content he said. Even so Smiletime embodies a service for easy-to-create and distribute content that has resonated with YouTube creators looking for more options. One video we did for Smiletime was 45 minutes of me bitching about X-Men Apocalypse. I didnt want to do anything highly produced. I just wanted to do it on Smiletime. That ended up doing really well for us Massey said. Lets block ads! (Why?) – Repost from: mashable Post – you can download ImmedTech app for android from link : bit.ly/ITapp-v1512

Netflix offline mode could happen – heres how Read more Technology News Here –>…

digitaltechnology… Attention Netflix viewers: your favorite streaming service is indeed exploring offline viewing for its content. There’s a good chance however that you won’t get it any time soon. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos chatted with CNBC about offline viewing which would let subscribers download and watch their favorite shows and movies on their devices even without an internet connection. Sarandos said Netflix is “looking at it now” though he didn’t offer a release timeline or many other details. He did note the feature would likely appeal to – and probably launch first in – regions with slower internet speeds and limited Wi-Fi access letting members in emerging markets watch Netflix without needing a robust connection. “We still think for the developed world our thesis has been true but I think as we get into more and more (of the) undeveloped world and developing countries that we want to find alternatives for people to use Netflix easily” he told CNBC. That means it’s unlikely Netflix will bring offline viewing to regions like the US or UK at least not to start. It doesn’t mean it will never happen just that those areas don’t seem to be the focus of Netflix’s offline plans. The streaming giant’s reach exploded earlier this year when it launched in 130 new countries in a single day. It’s now available in 190 territories and Netflix has made no secret it’s looking to international and emerging markets to drive its growth going forward. With US memberships slowing the firm will continue to look for ways to bring in more subscribers including it seems offering offline viewing. This isn’t the first we’ve heard Netflix talk about the feature; CEO Reed Hastings said in April the company needs to “keep an open mind about this.” And with competitor Amazon Prime Video already letting users watch content offline Netflix may want to flip the switch sooner rather than later. We’ve asked Netflix for more on its offline viewing plans and when we can expect it to roll out and will update this post if we hear back. Our picks for the best TVs of 2016!
